Kyle Chen has just won the Presidents Cup Boxing Championship in Taiwan (21st – 26th October). It is a superb achievement because, unlike in New Zealand where he currently competes as a Junior (Kyle is 15 years old), he competed at the Taiwan tournament in the Youth division (Under 19 yo). His opponent last night was an experienced 18 year old boxer and Taiwan champion who will be representing Taiwan at the Youth World Championships next month in Russia. Kyle said it was the toughest contest he’s had in a while, and that his opponent was very strong.
Kyle also won the President’s Cup last year, in the 70kg Junior division.
Recent achievements for 2016
Kyle won the Australian 2016 National Open Golden Gloves on Saturday afternoon, 27 August, in Brisbane. He competed in the Junior Male 75kg division, and overcame two Aussie State champions on his way to taking the Gold medal.
That achievement follows on the heels of him winning a National title (his third), also in the Junior Male 75kg division, at the 2016 Boxing New Zealand National Championships, held in Rotorua, 19 to 23 July.
Kyle has competed in ten bouts this year, for ten wins, which also includes an Auckland Provincial title, and Southland Provincial title.
